Live at the Apollo is a live album by James Brown , recorded at ' Apollo Teather of Harlem , New York , and published in 1963 .

Live at the Apollo was recorded in the evening of 24 October 1962 , at the expense of Brown himself: his record label, King Records, initially opposed the release of the album, thinking that a live album with no new songs would not have made economically. The house is surrendered after the pressures of Brown and his manager Bob Hobgood.

To the surprise of the King, the album was an immediate success. He stayed less than 66 weeks on the Billboard 200 and as far as the 2nd place. Several record stores, especially in the southeastern United States , found it difficult to keep up with the demands of the album from fans. The disc jockey of radio began to send the A side of the album in its entirety, interrupting only for publicity, and then resume with the B-side, always in full.

The American magazine Rolling Stone , in its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time , ranking Live at the Apollo at 24th place.

During his career, Brown recorded three more concerts at the Apollo: Live at the Apollo Vol II ( 1968 ), Revolution of the Mind: Recorded Live at the Apollo, Vol III ( 1971 ), and Live at the Apollo 1995 ( 1995 ).

Although not mentioned on the cover, the choral group of Brown, the Famous Flames (Bobby Byrd, Bobby Bennett, and Lloyd Stallworth) played an important role in Live at the Apollo.

Despite his celebrity and the significant historical value, Live at the Apollo was not remastered CD until 1990 , because the original tapes were gone and the ones left were not of high enough quality for a CD satisfactory. The tapes were found at the end of 1989 . A deluxe version of the album remixed with sounds and another was released in 2004 .
